
Teaching Knowledge Test (TKT)
British Council administers the Teaching Knowledge Test (TKT) on behalf of Cambridge ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages). TKT aims to increase teachers’ confidence and enhance job prospects by focusing on the core teaching knowledge needed by teachers of primary, secondary or adult learners, anywhere in the world.
A TKT award will help you to understand the different methodologies for teaching, the ‘language of teaching’, the ways in which resources can be used, the key aspects of lesson planning, and classroom management methods for different needs.

Preparation

Dates and locations
Venues: TKT exams are administered in Lagos, Abuja, and Port Harcourt.
Registration dates: registration is open all year – when 20 or more applications have been collected we submit entries to Cambridge who then set an exams date for approximately six weeks time.
Fees
The fee to take a TKT exam is NGN 8,500 per module.
Register
Step 1: Collect a TKT application form from one of our exam centres in Lagos, Abuja or Port Harcourt.
You will need to bring along with you two current passport sized photographs, a valid international passport (original only, no other form of ID is acceptable) and a photocopy of the information page(s) of your international passport.
Step 2: Fill in your details, sign and submit the application form to one of the exam centre staff. Please note:
- On the exam day your original international passport must match the copy attached to the completed application form.
- No PO Box/PMB/agent and/or international addresses will be accepted as correspondence addresses. Please write your address clearly.
- Application forms may not be taken away from the British Council office, and candidates must sign their application form in person. No other person may sign on behalf of the candidate. Signing on behalf of a candidate will lead to automatic disqualification.
- If your family name has been changed because of a recent marriage, the name change must be entered in your international passport, or otherwise you can register in your maiden name. No other form of evidence is acceptable in the case of a name change.
Step 3: Pay the exam fee.
Payment is made by bank draft, drawn from any of the existing Nigerian banks, payable to British Council.
Please note that your application will not be processed until payment has been received.
Step 4: Confirmation
After you have registered, you will be notified of the exam date six weeks before the time.
Results
TKT certificates are issued by Cambridge within two weeks of receipt of the exam scripts. They can be collected from the relevant British Council office approximately three weeks after the test date.
Payment
Payment is made by bank draft, drawn from any of the existing Nigerian banks, payable to British Council. Please submit payment with your application forms at the British Council office of the city in which you wish to sit your examinations.
