This call is for a Festival Director (in-waiting) who will take over from the current director in April 2018.

The selected candidate will be an experienced, creative and innovative professional who will manage the festival’s artistic vision, curation, programming and fundraising.

The selected Festival Director in-waiting will:

  1.  Understudy the current Festival Director from July 2017 till March 2018.
  2.  Lead the festival as Festival Director from April 2018 on a 2-year, (renewable for a further year) contract.

Role Overview

Main Responsibilities

Festival Management

  • Report to the Festival Board and translate strategic vision to artistic and work plans.
  • Conceive and implement the artistic vision and strategy of the festival with focus on programming, curatorship, cross collaborations, commissions and documentation.
  • Build a development platform for theatre arts stakeholders to nurture their creative knowledge and networks.
  • Develop and sustain strong, supportive and respectful working relationships with key people and institutions in the corporate sector.
  • Artist liaison and management of festival team - box office, festival assistants, Health and Safety.

Operational Management

  • Lead festival team on all aspects of planning, programming, curatorship, documentation, fundraising, budgeting, proposals, venue and networking.
  • Work with festival team to develop and increase the national and international profile of the festival.
  • Oversee core logistics for the festival including venues, contracts, risk assessments and licensing for all aspects of the festival.
  • Maintaining good and effective communication with the festival venues, producers and other stakeholders.
  • Responsible for keeping records and statistics about operations of the Festival.

Funding and Finance

  • Be accountable for the financial management of the Festival.
  • Responsible for fund raising for the festival.
  • Responsible for managing relationships with the funding partners.


  • At least 3 years’ experience in festival programming and curatorship with a portfolio demonstrating artistic excellence in the performing arts sector.
  • Extensive knowledge of Nigeria’s creative sectors, with special focus on site specific and unconventional performance.
  • Strong skills in artistic production and arts management
  • Experience in fundraising  for at least 4 creative projects preferably theatre
  • Excellent, customer focused written and verbal communication skills.
  • Knowledge and ability to work in a fully digital environment.


Time Commitment and Remuneration

  • It is expected that the role will require 30 – 40 days commitment between July 2017 and March 2018.
  • The Festival Director in waiting will be paid N1, 000,000 in instalments, against milestones, for this period.
  • The remuneration from 2018 will be N2, 000,000 annually for a 50 – 60 day annual commitment; also paid in instalments, against milestones. 
  • The chosen candidate will be engaged on a 2 year contract for service with the possibility of extension for one year.




Reports directly to the board of the Lagos Theatre Festival for direction, work assignment, clarifications and approvals.
