PROJECT TITLE: Research for the availability and effectiveness of in-service teacher training

Duration: 2 years

Through a project funded by the MacArthur Foundation under the Partnership for Strengthening Innovation and Practice in Secondary Education programme, the British Council carried out research to investigate the relationship between teacher training and educational outcomes for girls in secondary school.

Led by the Institute of Education of the University of London, the study was conducted in Jigawa, Kano, Lagos, Sokoto and Rivers States, reflecting a wide range of context in which teacher education is provided and teachers work on issues of supporting girls' learning.

The project ended in 2016 and is expected to deepen understanding of the relationship between what teachers learn about gender and girls’ education in pre-service (PRESET) and in-service (INSET) teacher training and the progression and achievement of girls in secondary school.  The study also evaluated how effectively teacher training creates knowledge and shapes attitudes about girls’ issues and creates a climate of support for gender equality and women’s rights in schools.
