Promoting peace and stability in Nigeria
The Nigeria Stability and Reconciliation Programme supports Nigerian efforts to reduce violent conflict and promote stability, peace and reconciliation. We work to encourage non-violent conflict resolution and reduce the impact of violent conflict on the most vulnerable, including women, girls, young people and persons living with disability. We support actors and institutions at the federal, state and community levels to address key drivers of conflict, improve co-ordination and accountability, and provide mediation support in some of the states worst affected by violent conflict.
OUR WORK
We work in four inter-related areas:
Security and Governance: Strengthen the performance of – and public trust in – the way Nigeria manages violent conflict by supporting security and peace-building institutions to become more co-ordinated, participatory, inclusive and accountable.
Economic and Natural Resources: Address grievances around employment, economic opportunities and the distribution of resources, especially over land and water use.
Women and Girls: Reduce the impact of violence against women and girls and increase their participation and influence in peace building.
Research, Advocacy and Media: Provide impartial, independent research and analysis to assist Nigerian decision-takers and policymakers develop and implement policies to build sustainable peace. This includes working with the media to help report conflict more sensitively.
WHERE WE WORK
We work in eight states: Bayelsa, Borno, Delta, Kaduna, Kano, Plateau, Rivers and Yobe.
OUR APPROACH
We deliver technical assistance to government ministries, departments and agencies, community leaders and development and civil society partners to support them to work in more effective, inclusive and conflict-sensitive ways.
We publish and disseminate research reports including lessons learned on conflict prevention and management.
We provide support to civil society organisations in the form of technical assistance, capacity building and grants that are implementing innovative projects to address the drivers of violence and the impact of violent conflict, particularly on those most marginalised, vulnerable and affected.
We provide financial support for peace policy advocacy and peace-building initiatives (including mediation and reconciliation) undertaken by government, community and non-governmental organisations.
