Laptop and mobile screen displaying the EnglishScore B2B online English test

Test your English. Prove your skills. Anytime, anywhere.

In a mobile-first world, access to education and employment opportunities should be as accessible as everything else on your phone. EnglishScore is the British Council’s mobile English test, putting a global standard of assessment directly into your pocket.

How it works

The test is designed for convenience without compromising on quality. Available for download on both Android and iOS devices, it transforms a standard smartphone into a powerful assessment tool.

The test takes approximately 40 minutes to complete. During this time, it assesses four critical language skills: grammar, vocabulary, reading and listening. The adaptive technology ensures that the questions become harder or easier depending on performance, providing an accurate measure of proficiency for every user.

Global recognition and academic relevance

EnglishScore results are aligned to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). This is the international standard for describing language ability.

For job seekers and students, this provides a credible way to prove their skills. A recognised English score on a CV helps candidates stand out in a competitive job market. For employers, it offers a rapid and scalable way to screen thousands of applicants remotely, ensuring they have the necessary communication skills before the interview stage begins.

To ensure integrity, the app uses advanced security features. This includes camera proctoring technology to verify that the person taking the test is the person on the certificate.

Success story: Improving technical opportunities in Ghana

The impact of accessible mobile testing is already being felt across the continent. Through the I-WORK project, a partnership between the UK, South Africa and Ghana, EnglishScore has been used to enhance technical and vocational education (TVET) systems.

By aligning skills training with international standards, the project helps improve apprenticeship policies and work opportunities for young people. The ability to verify English proficiency quickly and cheaply on a mobile phone removes barriers for young technicians entering the global workforce.
