Connecting Classrooms is the British Council’s flagship education programme for schools delivered in over 30 Countries. It is jointly funded with the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO). In Nigeria, Connecting Classrooms has been delivering professional development courses (face-to-face and online) and workshops to teachers, school leaders (principals and headteachers)  to give them the knowledge and approaches they need to effectively embed the teaching of six core skills across the curriculum and policy dialogue engagement with Education Boards such as Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN), Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC), States Universal Basic Education Boards, Federal and States Ministry of Education officials since 2009

In the last few weeks, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, this high-quality developmental core skills courses are now delivered online to enable school leaders and teachers strengthen their knowledge and skills to create an enriching experience for their students. Core skills, sometimes referred to as deep learning skills or 21st-century skills, introduce young people to new ways of working, new ways of thinking, and new ways of living in a global world. Developing these skills will help young people grow into creative and critical citizens, ready to shape the future for themselves and future generations.

Digital Literacy

Digital technologies are increasingly pervading all aspects of our lives. As they do, it becomes increasingly important for individuals to understand not only how they might utilise technologies effectively, but also be able to critically evaluate the digital content they encounter and understand the purposes for which it has been developed.  Schools, colleges, universities and other institutions need to consider how they might best support the development of digital literacy among their students.  Through this course, participants will;

Communication and Collaboration

Communication and collaborative skills are vital for the purposes of obtaining, sharing, creating and disseminating information, knowledge, opinions, skills, values and ways of thinking and seeing. Whether it is in the classroom, in the playground, in the home, in the neighbourhood, in the place of worship, or through TV and the Internet, children and young people spend a huge amount of their time building and sharing knowledge, identities and experiences through communication and collaboration.  Through this course, participants will;

Deep Learning

By deep learning, we refer to the learning experience by which the learner is engaged at the higher-order thinking skills of analysing, evaluate and create as described by Benjamin Bloom in the Bloom Taxonomy.  In addition, it is guided by the ability of the teacher to explore previous understanding, experience and exposure of the learner. Critical Thinking and Problem Solving

Critical Thinking and Problem Solving is one of the six deep learning skills have been identified as essential to the development of individuals ready to take on the challenges of today’s globally interconnected world. Critical thinking is self-directed thinking that produces new and innovative ideas and solves problems. Reflecting critically on learning experiences and processes and making effective decisions. Wherever you have a goal which is blocked for any reason - lack of resources, lack of information, and so on - you have a problem.
